New Article, much of it from Cambridge, Ontario

[edit]

As discussed with @Hwy43 and on the Talk page for Wikipedia talk: WikiProject Canadian communities (Need help, Creating new article, Galt, Ontario redirect problem), the other two communities of Cambridge had their own pages but Galt did not. It does now.

I still need to do some editing on it, and create new content for Economy, etc. However, most other aspects are fully covered - for the entire huge city of Cambridge, Ontario - in that primary article.

I will condense the Cambridge article since only a bit of Galt History is needed there, considering the long section in this Galt article.

Collaborative edits to expand and improve this article would be appreciated.

Hmmm, I see I will also need to rebuild some of the citations copied from the Cambridge article. Will do. Peter K Burian (talk) 15:16, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Land Acquisition from Joseph Brant and Six Nations

[edit]

Hello,

I've been researching the history of Six Nations and the land ownership of Haldimand Treaty Territory. As far as current research is showing, General John Graves Simcoe issued a patent in 1793 to the Haldimand proclamation, effectively removing Six Nations ownership of the land, despite the clarity of the original Haldimand proclamation. The Indigenous people then only had the right to "occupancy" and had to sell their land directly to the Crown if they wanted a revenue stream. The Crown would then sell the land to settlers. By 1816, William Dickson wold have purchased the land from the Crown, not from Six Nations or Joseph Brant. The wording at the beginning of this History section is vague at best, but definitely could be misleading about the status of land ownership in the Grand River Valley. Especially considering the land dispute is still ongoing today.

The primary source for this information is Joseph Brant and His World: 18th Century Mohawk Warrior and Statesman by James Paxton.

I would suggest including a sentence before introducing William Dickson regarding this ownership transfer, maybe with a hyperlink to the Haldimand Proclamation or to Simcoe's patent. I would be happy to write it, I just figured this type of thing should be discussed by those more familiar with the page before I edit anything.
